Multitasking is a buzz word for today’s world. If you have the time it is nice to be able to do one thing at a time. But when we work, have a family, friends, church, civic groups, children, grandchildren and on and on and on, just where do we find the time to learn a language? Mothers are always doing two things at once. They fix hair, give baths, do homework, fix meals, clean, and wash clothes, all at the same time. My experience has been the same … you learn a language while you are doing something else. It is the concept of synergy … or the principle of 1 + 1 = 8. I listen and interact with my Linguaphone PDQ Spanish Course or Pimsleur Comprehensive Spanish Course while I am driving into the city or to the doctor’s office. I listen while I am out walking and at the same time, looking at the autumn leaves or flowers. I listen while hiking in the mountains. I listen while I am at the gym on the treadmill or lifting weights. I listen while I am riding my bike. The key is to do two things at once. You use the time that you have to do something, like driving someplace, or exercising and also doing something that you want to do in this same time period. So instead of sitting down and using a half hour listening and interacting with a language course, you use a half hour driving and use that same half hour listening to your course. Now figure that out. In one 30 minute period you are driving, plus you are listening for 30 minutes. So instead of adding up to 30 minutes, it adds up to 30 minutes of driving and 30 minutes of listening. That one 30 minute period now is equal to 30 + 30 = 60. You have doubled your time’s value. Not bad! Now think of the things you can do this with. While waiting at the doctors office to get in for your appointment or while driving, biking, walking, hiking, boating, and flying. You get the point. Figure out all of the times in your life that you can do this and in the time that you drive to work an hour or

I don’t know how old you are, but I am well past retirement age. I have experienced cataract surgery on both eyes, have glaucoma and even had a heart attack. So you see I am not at my peak of physical condition or age … to say the least. One day I decided to learn Spanish. I did not think that I was too old to learn new things. I bought myself the Pimsleur 8 lesson Introductory Audio Course. After the very first lesson I was interacting with native speakers and saying simple phrases and words. I was speaking Spanish. I was speaking a new language. It wasn’t hard at all. I figured I could really learn this language rapidly. What a great way to learn a language. So the next step for me was to buy the Pimsleur Comprehensive I, Comprehensive II, and the Comprehensive III, and the Plus Courses. At the present time I have completed the I, and II Courses and am just starting the III. I know with what I have learned I could get myself around Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, or some other Latin American country … that is if they spoke slowly and not at their regular rapid rate. This would give me some time to think. But I really could navigate myself around a city or a country with some confidence. My personal success with this new language has been very exciting for me. And this with just 60 lessons under my belt. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length. In fact, due to my excitement I decided to buy myself a PDQ Linguaphone Course which I have just completed. I did this to see the differences between the two courses. I enjoyed having a new presentation and learning additional words and phrases. Now I have purchased a Linguaphone All Talk 16 hour Spanish Course. It has even more vocabulary than the Pimsleur Comprehensive Courses and will be a great addition. I am getting to the point that I understand a lot more when I hear someone speaking Spanish. I can turn on a Spanish TV program and follow a lot of what is being said. I know that it is going to take
